I’ve spent the better part of the past ten years as an editor for both online and offline publications. When I first started, I felt unfulfilled and defeated. To me, being an editor meant that I had failed as a writer.

But over time I began to realize that my work meant so much more than rewriting, rewording and fixing grammar. I became the one who set the tone and direction of the writing. I charted a course for my writers and readers through my editorial integrity.

So here we are now, in this awesome web-o-sphere, with infinite choices of content limited by finite time and attention. The writers write but who chooses what’s worthy of reading?

The good editor, of course.

Next up: Self-publishers on the web will need to evolve to “writer-editors” if they seek succees and sustainability.
The Rising Value of Editors on the Web is written by Charles Bohannan for Wordful.com, a blog about digital publishing.
