The Definition of Web Content

inside

Content is the single most important and sought-after commodity on the web. It’s the entire reason people go online and frequent news sites, blogs, chat rooms and billions of other web pages every day. But what exactly is content? On the web, we define content as the topics, ideas, facts or statements in a webpage or website. Content is published in the form of text, images, audio and video. Content serves four main purposes: to inform, educate, entertain and connect people. Go to any website and you’ll observe at least two of these purposes in action. [Read more...]

UPDATE: Where Wordful.com is Headed

1989391944_158816a87e

I’ve spent the last several weeks intensely planning the future of this blog and the Wordful brand. It’s been a trying time both personally and professionally as I struggle every day to make ends meet and provide for my family in this ruthless economy. And if you haven’t noticed, this blog presently generates just trickles of traffic and zero revenue. Toughest of all — it’s taking heaps of my time. So here’s where I’m at: instead of throwing in the towel (this was never a consideration by the way), I’m going to work even harder. Harder for you and harder for me and harder for my family. The challenges I’m facing are mere growing pains for something I envision as one day being great and meaningful. Or, as Seth Godin brilliantly puts it, I’m just in The Dip. So, dear readers — if you’re even out there and listening — prepare for the following improvements and enhancements: [Read more...]

How to Overcome Writing Anxiety

rinaldi

Allow me to be honest with you: I frequently suffer from writing anxiety. When I sit down to write a blog post, I usually stare at the screen for about ten minutes, thinking of the most effective opening line. When I finally squeeze that out and revise it a few times, I move on to the second line and do the same. Then the third, and fourth, and so on.

When I get a little momentum going I’m able to write a few lines without stopping, but not often. Usually I go over each phrase or word I just wrote and revise it until I feel it’s perfect, though it never is. This constipated form of writing produces about one blog post every four days.

Pretty pathetic, I know. But this time is a little different. Instead of setting out to write yet another predictable, prescriptive blog posts (something like “10 Tips to Make Life Better”), I decided to be transparent with you and reveal my inner angst. I think you’ll find it a more compelling read, and easier to relate to.

The way to overcome writing anxiety is very simple: [Read more...]

Eureka — the Internet Goldrush!

Since I’ve started blogging just 4 months ago, I keep hearing terms like “internet goldrush” and “21st century goldrush.” Gary Vaynerchuk refers to it often and “Remarkablogger” Michael Martine and I had a brief tweet about it last week. So what exactly does it mean? For starters, the internet goldrush is based on the widespread production, distribution and monetization of information, better known as content these days. The reason why it’s called a “goldrush” is because the supply of content has not caught up to the demand, thus creating an opportunity for content providers. In other words: it’s time to get rolling! When I think back to the real goldrushes of the 1800s, I picture bearded men with picks and shovels feverishly digging for nuggets in harsh, life-threatening conditions. It’s not quite the same this time around. For one thing, you don’t have to get up and leave town and share a tent with other scruffy goldminers — home computers and internet connections solve that problem (so do cheap hosting, free blog software and thousands of free marketing channels).  More importantly is the fact that gold is finite and content is infinite. How to Name Your Blog: 5 Tips to Make it Easy

Welcome to the third and final post of my “How to Name Your Blog” series. Part one talks about the basics of blog naming and part two covers five categories of names you can choose from. I recommend you read them as a primer for this post, where we learn how to pick a great name! So you need a name for your blog. I know that feeling very well. I’ve been there a few times, often for weeks on end, mulling over hundreds of names but never quite feeling satisfied. The challenge with naming your blog is that it’s likely to be the first thing in a series of things you want to be perfect. Right? Wordful was my very first naming challenge. Back then I worked a dead-end office job that offered me only mere scraps of creative expression. I got fed up one day and created an opportunity to start my own web copywriting company. For the name, I wanted it to truly and succinctly represent who I was and what I had to offer — in this case, writing and words. Thus the name Wordful. [Read more...]
